Questions to Ask When Hiring a Lawyer

The Law Offices of Stephen J. Nolan is not a "volume" law firm. We value the opportunity to advocate for clients in a hands-on, professional manner with the focus always on keeping our clients informed and working to achieve a successful outcome. We are extremely fortunate that the majority of our clients are referred to us by former clients and other lawyers.

We offer confidential case evaluations, without charge, because we understand it can be difficult to decide which attorney will provide the most effective and cost-efficient representation.

Protecting Your Rights, Your Interests and Your Future

Regardless of whether you have been harmed physically, emotionally and/or financially, you need a skilled attorney who can achieve the results you seek.

In an attempt to assist you during this important decision-making process, we've assembled some questions to ask when hiring a lawyer:

  • What kind of experience do you have handling my type of case?
  • If I don't recover a settlement or we lose in court, will I be responsible for litigation expenses?
  • How will health insurance liens or Medicare liens affect my settlement recovery?
  • How often do you appear in court for hearings or trials?
  • Can we mediate or arbitrate instead of going to trial?
  • How long will it take to settle my case?
  • What the statute of limitations that applies to my situation?
  • Does the attorney give his or her clients their cell phone number?

A very important question to ask when hiring a lawyer in a personal injury or wrongful death case: Do you know how Maryland's cap on non-economic loss will apply to my case?

A lack of knowledge about how the state's cap on non-economic loss could affect your case should be a major warning sign. This is a crucial question and an unclear answer is a pretty good indicator that a firm lacks the knowledge and experience to effectively fight for your rightful compensation.

As was the case in his recovery of over $9.8 million dollars for a family in a mesothelioma case, Steve Nolan knows how to minimize some of the pitfalls that Maryland's damage cap presents for people with catastrophic injuries or wrongful death.

As a past President of the Baltimore County Bar Association, Stephen J. Nolan is well-respected by his colleagues and in 1989, he earned the prestigious AV® peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell for his legal ability and ethical standards. It is because of his reputation for hard work and successful results that many law firms inside and outside of Maryland regularly refer their clients to him for specific cases
